Unemployed Workers Centres launch benefits guide amidst redundancy fears

Derbyshire Unemployed Workers' Centres (DUWC) have this week launched a guide to benefits for those made redundant in the pandemic.

Funded by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, the Centres' advice workers have put together information that will be needed by those facing unemployment as many businesses face hard times. Importantly, the guide gives people important contact details so that they do not face their problems alone.

"Many people will be coming into contact with the Department for Work and Pensions for the first time." said Andy Parkes, senior Welfare Rights Adviser at DUWC. "It is important that people check they are receiving all they are entitled to.  It is also essential that people seek independent advice about their rights and obligations regarding their claim.”

The Guide is available both online and in hard copy.

Derbyshire Unemployed Workers' Centres received a boost this week when the Central England Co-op agreed to make the guide available in its food stores in Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, and Amber Valley.

"During this pandemic unemployment is an even more isolating experience than is usually the case" said Colin Hampton, Coordinator of the Derbyshire Unemployed Workers' Centres. "With so many places necessarily closed it is difficult to get the information out to those that need it. The Co-op support means that we will be able to reach out to those who might not be able to access information online.”

Derbyshire Unemployed Workers' Centres have been helping, advising and representing unemployed people since 1983 and has offices in Chesterfield, Alfreton and Shirebrook. If you need help with benefits or credit please ring the helpline on (01246) 231441 or visit the website www.duwc.org.uk
