Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

A tax-free disability benefit which replaced Disability Living Allowance, for those 16 and over from June 2013. Paid to those with disabilities who need help with daily living and mobility.

Your entitlement to PIP is not affected by your income, savings or capital, and you do not have to have paid national insurance contributions.

Personal Independence Payment has replaced Disability Living Allowance for adults. Those already getting disability living allowance have had their awards transferred to PIP, a process due to be completed in 2021. People aged 65 and over who are claiming for the first time must claim Attendance Allowance instead.

Who can claim?

You qualify if all of the following apply:

  • You are aged 16 or over and not reached State Pension age.
  • You satisfy certain conditions about residence and presence in the UK and are not a ‘person subject to immigration control’.
  • Have had difficulties with daily living or getting around (or both) for at least 3 months.
  • Expect these difficulties to continue for at least 9 months.
  • You satisfy a disability test.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) has two components: one for problems with daily living activities such as preparing food, washing and bathing, communicating and engaging with other people; one for mobility activities, including planning and following journeys and moving around.

You can receive one or both. You are usually assessed by a Health Care Professional – you are given a certain number of points for how bad your problems are with each activity. You can get different rates of each component, depending how many points you score.

There are ‘Special Rules’ for ‘terminal illness’ your claim can be fast tracked.
