Claims made for children under 16 with a health condition/s or disability who need help getting around or have supervision or care needs.
Child Disability Living Allowance is non means tested and tax free. An award can trigger additional income in other benefits, such as Universal Credit and those with an existing child tax credit award.
Who can claim?
If your child has care needs in connection with their bodily functions (washing/bathing, dressing/undressing etc.) or require close supervision to avoid danger to themselves and others (e.g. due to behavioral issues) depending on the amount of help needed they may qualify for one of three rates.
If your child needs help with their mobility there is consideration of the severity of their disabilities with regards to walking - and includes the ‘virtually unable to walk’ test for the higher rate, and or whether they need guidance and supervision whilst out of doors for the lower rate.
Importantly, your child must need substantially more help than a child of the same age without a disability would need.
